About Root Canals

In cases of severe tooth decay, infection, or trauma, a root canal may be necessary to save your child’s tooth, even if it’s a baby tooth. There are several types of endodontic procedures that can be done, depending on the damage done to the pulp, or soft inside, of your child’s tooth. Our dental health procedures are as gentle as possible and are performed with your child’s comfort in mind.

Common Dental Procedure

Parents shouldn’t have to feel nervous about root canals. Root canals are one of the most common dental procedures performed with over 14 million done every year. This simple dental treatment can save your child’s natural teeth and can prevent the need for dental implants, bridges, or other treatments.

Is There an Infection?

Every tooth has pulp at its center. This pulp is a collection of blood vessels that aids in building the surrounding material that forms the tooth. Pulp infection can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips or too many dental procedures. Symptoms of an infection can be identified as visible injury or tooth swelling, temperature sensitivity or pain in the tooth and gums.

Get Rid of Diseased Pulp

If your child experiences any of these symptoms, our staff will examine his or her tooth and will likely recommend non-surgical treatment to get rid of the diseased pulp. From there, we remove the injured pulp and then extensively clean and seal the whole root canal system. The way root canals are treated at All About Kids Dental involves local anesthesia to minimize your child’s discomfort and we can often complete the task in one visit, except for in rare cases. In about 90 percent of cases, we’ve found this type of dental treatment to be successful. If for any reason your child’s tooth can’t withstand endodontic treatment or if we determine there’s a low chance of success, we’ll let you know at the time of consultation or the moment a complication becomes clear during or after treatment. We will also offer nitrous oxide for analgesia, if necessary. In nearly all cases, your child can return to school or any other activities on the same day we treat them. In a very few cases, a day of rest may be recommended.

Follow-Up Treatments

After we’ve finished your child’s root canal, we strongly advise that you immediately set up a follow-up appointment for them for within a few weeks of completion at our office. Together, we’ll confirm at that point what, if any type of restoration is needed to further protect your child’s tooth. Complications rarely arise for endodontic patients after routine microsurgery or endodontic treatment. However, if a problem does come up, we are always available and at your service. To stop further decay, we will also show you how to encourage good dental hygiene for your children so it becomes a habit that will follow them for the rest of their lives.

Endodontic Treatments

This procedure can come with a range of costs associated with it, and those prices can vary depending on factors like damage severity to the affected tooth and which tooth needs the root canal. Still, endodontic treatment is far less expensive than replacement with an artificial tooth in most cases.
